I only really just noticed the similarity between the gills on the underside of a Manta ray and human ribs.
This visual link to a skeleton could work nicely to communicate the idea that manta rays are dying out because skeletons usually = death.
I will experiment with trying to use this idea and illustrate some skeletal looking designs.
